It’s no secret this summer has been an incredibly hot one! This means that hydration is more important now than ever. Water helps with virtually every function in our body, from helping the brain function to helping regulate body temperature. It is easy to get caught up in summer fun and forget to drink water, but we want to emphasize just how important it is to be drinking every hour!
Aside from helping regulate your body temperature, water also helps to lubricate your joints, supports cognitive function, helps nutrient absorption, helps to boost energy, and the list goes on!
The suggested water intake varies for every individual based off of activity level, medications, age, health status, etc- but, a good rule of thumb is 8, 8 ounce glasses and some sources recommend even more. This need can increase if you are in the heat all day! We lose water through urine, but also through sweat. This is why athletes as well as those spending time in the heat require a bit more.
A great way to determine if you are consuming enough water is to measure your thirst and urine. You shouldn’t be waiting until you have a dry mouth or feel incredibly thirsty, especially in this heat. Drink as soon as you feel thirsty or even if you know it has been awhile! Another good method is to make sure your urine is light yellow or clear in color. Please note some medications can alter the color of urine and this is a general guideline!
